Trauma is the lasting emotional response that often results from experiencing a distressing event. Experiencing a traumatic event can harm a person’s sense of safety, sense of self, and ability to regulate emotions and navigate relationships.

Long after the traumatic event occurs, people with trauma can often feel shame, helplessness, powerlessness and intense fear. These often debilitating symptoms can involve:

  • instrusive memories (flashbacks);

  • avoidance of triggering places/events;

  • negative changes in thinking and mood (numbing, apathy, hopelessness etc.);

  • changes in physical and emotional reactions (startling, rage, sleep disturbances);

  • and even self-destructive behaviours

In some cases, hypnotherapy is used as an adjunct therapy along side traditional or CBT psychotherapy. 

Trauma and PTSD can affect anyone, at any age, and for many reasons. The same situation can be experienced differently by different people and there is no one-size fits all definition of what is considered traumatizing.
